Seasonal patterns in nutrient bioavailability in boreal headwater streams

چکیده

Changes in nutrient bioavailability due to increased loading of dissolved organic matter (DOM) may impact boreal freshwaters. Yet, the relative carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) associated with terrestrial DOM remains poorly understood. We applied short-term bioassays natural bacterial inocula determine seasonal variation bioavailable pools from four headwater streams northern Sweden. Experiments were designed exhaust nutrients by inducing limiting conditions when all required resources except for targeted (C, N, or P) are provided excess. hypothesized that supply different would reflect variations demand, hydrology, temperature. The delivery DOM-associated were, on average, 2%, 11%, 38% total C, P, respectively, emphasizing relatively low C these DOM-rich waters. Bioavailable N : P ratios peaked autumn sites, lower values winter spring. Both terms (% total) absolute concentrations, pattern was characterized systematically high period. Furthermore, links between temperature hydrology varied across time periods, elements. Thus, elevated concentrations suggest potential leaf fall, as well late season storms rewet dry soils, serve considerable sources aquatic ecosystems.

Large Carbon Dioxide Fluxes from Headwater Boreal and Sub-Boreal Streams

Half of the world's forest is in boreal and sub-boreal ecozones, containing large carbon stores and fluxes. Carbon lost from headwater streams in these forests is underestimated. We apply a simple stable carbon isotope idea for quantifying the CO2 loss from these small streams; it is based only on in-stream samples and integrates over a significant distance upstream. We demonstrate that convent...

Conditions in Agricultural Headwater Streams

11 Whilst the processes involved in the cycling of dissolved phosphorus (P) in rivers have been 12 extensively studied, less is known about the mechanisms controlling particulate P concentrations 13 during small and large flows. This deficiency is addressed through an analysis of large numbers of 14 suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected under baseflow (n = 222) and storm event (n...

Stoichiometry and estimates of nutrient standing stocks of larval salamanders in Appalachian headwater streams

1. Because of their longevity and skeletal phosphorus demand, vertebrates can have distinct influences on the uptake, storage and recycling of nutrients in ecosystems. Quantification of body stoichiometry, combined with estimates of abundance or biomass, can provide insights into the effect of vertebrates on nutrient cycling. 2. We measured the nutrient content and estimated the abundance and b...

Comparison of fungal activities on wood and leaf litter in unaltered and nutrient-enriched headwater streams.

Fungi are the dominant organisms decomposing leaf litter in streams and mediating energy transfer to other trophic levels. However, less is known about their role in decomposing submerged wood. This study provides the first estimates of fungal production on wood and compares the importance of fungi in the decomposition of submerged wood versus that of leaves at the ecosystem scale. We determine...
